A bit of History about Hacienda Vejer, Spain

Vejer de la Frontera is a Spanish hilltop town and municipality in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia, on the right bank of the river Barbate. The town of Vejer de la Frontera occupies a low hill overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar and surrounded by orchards and orange groves. It contains several ancient churches and convents, and the architecture of many of its houses recalls the period of Moorish rule, which lasted from 711 until the town was captured by Saint Ferdinand of Castile in 1248. Agriculture and fruit-farming are the chief industries; fighting bulls are also bred in the neighborhood and a running of the bulls is held annually.

Vejer de la Frontera is a Spanish municipality located in the province of Cádiz ( Andalusia ). The nucleus of the town stands on a 200 meter high mountain, on the banks of the Barbate River and 8 kilometers away from the coast. The municipal term includes a stretch of coastline of the Atlantic Ocean , where El Palmar de Vejer is located , a small rural nucleus that stands out for tourism. The municipality's economy depends on agriculture and small-scale summer tourism. The phrase "de la Frontera" alludes to the Granada Border .

Its walled historic center, which still preserves the castle and several significant churches, was declared a historical-artistic complex in 1976. Vejer is part of the so-called 'Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain'.

In 2016 , Vejer de la Frontera had 12,788 inhabitants. 3 Its area is 264 km² and has a density of 49.42 inhabitants / km². Its geographical coordinates are 36º 15 'N, 5º 58' W. It has 8 km of coastline, along which the beach of El Palmar de Vejer extends . It is located at an altitude of 201 meters above sea level and 58 kilometers from the provincial capital, Cádiz .

Vejer has been populated since the early Paleolithic and was already fortified in the Bronze Age . From the Tartessian and Roman times , remains dating from the 7th century BC have been found . C. under the current walls, which have been attributed to Baesippo . However, it is possible that this city was rather in Barbate, since the name of Vejer could come from Baesarum , a city documented by Plinio as Baesaro or Besaro. 4

In 711 , Vejer fell into Muslim hands after the Battle of Guadalete , in which the Muslims, commanded by Táriq ibn Ziyad , defeated Don Rodrigo . The population remained under Arab rule for five and a half centuries, calling itself Bashir. Remains from this period remain such as the castle gate, from the 11th century , part of the walls and the network of its streets.

Vejer returned to Christian hands on two occasions. The first, in the year 1250 , under the reign of Fernando III "El Santo". He returned to Arab rule in June 1264 , after a revolt in which the castle was taken by force. The second and final one began in August 1264 , expelling the Mudejars, and ended in 1285 . That same year, Sancho IV granted the Order of Santiago lordship over Vejer to consolidate the territory more quickly, although said order never took possession of Vejer. In 1307 , after a second repopulation, it became the manor of Guzmán el Bueno, which since 1299 was already the owner of the lordship of the traps of the entire area of the Strait of Gibraltar . After taking Tarifa , he also became the defender of the Strait, becoming the owner and lord, after the king, of these lands. The Dukes of Medina Sidonia would later inherit from him .

During the XV and XVI centuries , Vejer was dominated by the Guzmanes and, already in the Modern Age , the town faced, with Juan Relinque at the head, the Dukes of Medina Sidonia for control of the communal lands, the so-called " Hazas de la Suerte ". 5 Currently, work is being done on its recognition as a Site of Cultural Interest and Intangible Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO).

On October 21, 1805 , the Battle of Trafalgar took place off the coast of Cape Trafalgar , in Los Caños de Meca , an old town belonging to Vejer. This naval battle is considered one of the most important of the 19th century . He faced the fleets of Spain and France against the English fleet, which, led by Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson , who obtained the victory. Trafalgar Square (“Plaza de Trafalgar”, in Spanish ), square in the center of London, was built to commemorate this victory, with a central column supporting a statue of Admiral Nelson. The Battle of Trafalgar, followed by the Napoleonic invasion, set a decisive precedent in the collapse of the Spanish overseas empire.

During the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1939), Vejer de la Frontera had 18,000 inhabitants distributed between the urban nucleus and the districts, especially Barbate and Zahara de los Atunes . The economic crisis of 1929 left its effects felt with an increase in unemployment in the municipality, associated with low economic productivity and poor harvests. During this historical period, various reforms were enacted, such as the Agrarian Reform , which led to attempts to collectivize land , mainly large estates , which caused an increase in tension associated with the political and social division in the municipality.

At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) there were major disturbances, which led to the dismissal of the Municipal Corporation and the officials of Vejer, as well as arrests and murders, such as that of the mayor Francisco Salgueiro Rodríguez , the councilor Juan Mejías Delgado , councilor Alfonso Melero Melero , councilor Francisco Braza Basallote and the petty mayor of Barbate, Francisco Tato Anglada , among others. Likewise, part of the valuable cultural and religious heritage of the municipality was destroyed through the burning of the Parish Church, the archive and the library.

On March 11, 1938, the coastal town of Barbate was segregated , which became a municipality and was renamed Barbate de Franco , alluding to General Francisco Franco , a name that it maintained until 1998. After said segregation, Vejer de la Frontera saw a reduction in its population (10 660 inhabitants) and its territorial extension of 143 km² (including part of the Hazas de la Suerte).

Between 1940 and 1960, the municipality experienced a slight demographic growth associated with agricultural activity linked to large estates . However, between the years 1960 and 1980 Vejer de la Frontera registered a significant emigration of young people due to the low economic dynamism of the La Janda region .

In recent decades (1990-2005) the crisis in the agricultural sector in Vejer de la Frontera has given way to the rise of the tertiary sector , associated with the tourism sector and the construction sector .

Precisely, in recent years the limited economic dynamism of the La Janda region has contributed to favor the emigration of the young population of the municipality, which explains its demographic stagnation and the progressive aging of the population.
